Social Media

Social Media
The article “Dipping into Social Media in the Classroom” has a lot of important information for teachers that would allow the students as well as the teacher to grow. It provided opportunities to participate in Twitter. According to the site this would allow the students to deepen classroom conversation and increase communication. When using social media it allows colleagues to be role models for the students. Social media teaches balance to the teacher and student because it provides a reference any time of the day (but you do not have to do it). Also, this is good for teachers because it provides a way of staying current with the education field. Social media provides a opportunity for the teacher and student, it is a model, teaches a different way of learning information, and using social media allows the teacher stay up to date with strategies or laws in the education field.

“Social Media Helps Teachers Transform Classroom Culture” is a site that explains how one teacher can use social media to change other teachers perspectives about the classroom. She posts on her blog pictures what she incorporates in the classroom. Right now she is focused on positive classroom management styles. Other teachers are able to use social media to share what they do in the classroom. This means that more teachers are able to share and incorporate what they do in the classroom which in turn provides more opportunities for learning for the students.
“9 Ways to Use Social Media in Your Classroom”explains how teachers can get students to become involved in the learning process. Students can get involved by being social, blog, tweet, scoop, pin, tumblr, skype, or time it. Each of these are a way to communicate with other people. Through this class we have already started blogging and tweeting. Scoop is a way to see the current events and find out what students might be interested in. Skype is a way to view other locations while communicating. Time it uses the program Dipity or Tiki-tok to document students converstion about a particular topic while teaching class. Through all these programs teachers, and students from many locations can learn by communicating through various programs.

Social media is benificial to schools because it provides a way of communicating either to parents, students, and even other faculty. It can be used as professional development. It is also used to keep students actively thinking or researching about a particular topic.

Personal Learning Networks PLN

Personal Learning Networks (PLNs)

PLNs is basically any type of communication that is online that allows the person to engage.  This contributes to learning different information that is meaningful and relevant to learning.
According to Brian Metcalfe he believes that “My Personal Learning Network is the key to keeping me up-to-date with all the changes that are happening in education and how technology can best support and engage today’s students.” http://onlinelearninginsights.wordpress.com/2013/01/22/how-to-create-a-robust-and-meaningful-personal-learning-network-pln/

Even Pinterest is a source of PLN because the user can create their own content based what they would like to know more information on.    This allows the user to learn at their own pace 24/7.

PLNs allows a person to be able to
"1) set their own learning goals 2) manage their learning; managing both content and process               3) communicate with others in the process of learning and thereby achieve learning goals
Simply put: A PLN is a system for lifelong learning.”
Educators can use PLNs for  Professional development – learn from content-area specialists
- Locate resources for your classroom, such as free websites and software
- Get lesson plan ideas from master teachers
- Learn about new technology and how to integrate it into your teaching
- Find collaborative solutions
- Find interesting links to education news
Educators can participate in different sources of PLN by getting involved in Professional Profiles, Wikis, Blogs, RSS Reader/News Aggregators, Nings, Social Bookmarking, Webinars, Backchanneling of conferences.

Blog 1 Crowd Learning

I believe that “crowd learning” is an important part of our educational society today. Crowd learning is when their is a conflict or a question and a novice looks for advise for that particular problem or conflict from a group of experts. This allows the novice to get more information about the pros and cons about making a decision via phone, internet, or other electronic devices. (Innovating Pedagogy Report 2013)
This is a more problem solution learning style. This would allow the students to be more independent by learning more information and taking charge of their own life. They would be more intrinsic learners.
I believe this would be easily incorporated in the classroom by having a problem and having the students create different solutions to the problem. As a teacher, I would give students the resources to look up information this could be a web, different sites to look at, or just ways to organize their information.(Innovating Pedagogy Report 2013)

Gregory Freund created an interactive program called Versal-interactive-online-courses. This allowed the students to interact with the program and learn a deeper learning skill. Students can use widgets which have surveys, quizzes and reference tools that will allow the students to have help when they need it. “This interactivity "enables a learning system where students can interact with models and lesson plans," Freund explains. "It's a much more powerful way to learn."” http://mashable.com/2013/07/09/versal-interactive-online-courses/

Peer wise is another great site for educators as well as the general public. It is a great site that has experts that are able to answer questions. Just post your question, share, and learn. This allows for you to ask a question and have it answered while having others read about your question and answer. This allows for the class to learn from your question. This is good for teachers as well as students. http://peerwise.cs.auckland.ac.nz/

Pebble pad is another great tool for incorporating the crowd learning style. This is a website that is an e-portfolio as well as a learning tool for students, teachers, colleges, and corporations. This website offers scaffolding for students who need more assistance. This allows for a person to write about a situation and post it to a select group to help offer different solutions. This can be shared with others. Overall the students will learn by reading what other people might be going through and what their decision was. This allows for learning through different environments. http://www.pebblepad.co.uk/about.asp

I feel that crowd learning is going to be a very great tool in the education field. It will be useful for others to read different questions and answers. While it incorporates a different learning style which is more student centered, there is still a role for the instructor as a guide. Teachers can still help facilitate and guide learners to better outcomes.
